Jimin & Jin

Let me remind you that Jin is the only other member whose English is nearly up to par with Rapmon’s, so he understood what he said, it just didn’t seem like it was worth more of a reaction than a blank stare to him. Jimin smirks and tilts his head a little in a “say what?” kind of motion, as if he wants to say something, but he holds his tongue. So yeah…they got a good chuckle…

Jungkook

Same.

(and since we’re talking about colorism I know someone’s gonna bring up him saying his ideal type having “white skin,” which is shady and colorist, yes, but I want to point out that this is his reaction when skin color is being used to randomly insult someone, literally for no reason. And he doesn’t look too entertained to me)

Taehyung

If that isn’t the signature “aha you funny…not” expression when someone randomly insults you, I don’t know what is. His reaction reminds me of when you’re at a family gathering and an older person says some fucked up shit to you, but you don’t want to look like the disrespectful problem child, so you don’t tell them they can kiss the fattest, blackest part of ya ass. You just politely tell them to cut you a slice of cornbread and move on.

And finally J-Hope, because I know his reaction is going to be apologist GOLD.

I’m gonna go against the grain and say…yeeeeeah, he probably didn’t. That was fake as fuck. That was honestly painful to watch, because I’ve been in situations similar to this. I’ve seen this expression in person and I’ve made it as well. This is what you do when you’re known as the “funny one,” the “class clown” - you immediately play along because you don’t want to ruin the mood. If the guy known for being bubbly and cheery isn’t smiling, how uncomfortable would that be for everyone else? J-Hope knows he is this person, the mood maker, and he knows if he shows he’s upset it may upset other people. He knows this. So when he FEELS his smile starts to fade even slightly, what does he do? 

He exaggerates it. He gestures at his face, like “teehee right? look how dark i am!” He plays along. But he doesn’t smile the same way that he did when he first heard Rapmon mention his name. This is a textbook defense mechanism, and it’s clear to me he’s uncomfortable in the end.

And even though he’s is out of frame in this video, Suga’s reaction is important as well. It’s clear to him that Rapmon was using their appearance as a joke, because he says he didn’t have any negative impressions upon first meeting them and thought they were all good looking. It’s clear he’s giving this answer in contrast to the one Rapmon gave. You can’t even pull that “they don’t speak english so they didn’t understand what he was saying!” excuse with BTS anymore. They all know what the words “black” and “dark” mean, they understood the question, they understood Namjoon’s answer, and none of them look entertained. The fact that Hoseok knew to not let his face fall completely, knowing people would look to him to lighten the mood, speaks volumes.

TL;DR

Namjoon came for Hoseok & Taehyung’s skin tones thinking it would be funny, and it backfired. Despite him speaking English, the people in the room (all fairly light skinned as far as I could see) don’t seem to react at all, either. It’s completely silent when he stops speaking. Namjoon’s gross colorist joke bombed, he made a whole room of people uncomfortable, and now his plethora of tan/dark skinned fans and fans who don’t find colorism comedic are not rightfully commenting on how shitty his “joke” was. Stop trying to defend this bullshit, it ain’t even worth it to be that damn wrong.
